Polish Radio February 10, 2010 Stasiak: Patriots are coming The head of the Presidential Chancellery, Wladyslaw Stasiak, has stated that the issue of deploying US Patriot missiles to Poland is proceeding well, but rests on the signing of a SOFA agreement. Stasiak has just returned from a two-day visit to Washington DC, during which he met with representatives of Barack Obama's administration. Wladyslaw Stasiak had a meeting at the White House with the director of the European department of the National Security Council and held talks with experts at the conservative-leaning Heritage Foundation and the Center for International and Strategic Studies Center. “We talked about the future of NATO in the context of a new strategic concept, as well as present day NATO, especially concerning Article 5 and its practical implementation,” stated Stasiak. Article 5 of the North Atlantic Charter obliges the alliance to defend its member states in case of a threat of an armed attack. Minister Stasiak said that the Patriot missiles will appear in Poland, but not sooner than in the second half of the year. Before the deployment, several issues have to be clarified – among them the approval of the SOFA agreement pertaining to the stationing of the US troops in Poland. Wladyslaw Stasiak said that as soon as the legislative process is concluded, President Lech Kaczynski will immediately sign the deal. The SOFA is under discussion at today's session of the Sejm, Poland’s lower house.
