Deutsche Welle February 10, 2010 Westerwelle calls for more German troops in Afghanistan German Foreign Minister Westerwelle has called for additional troops to be sent to Afghanistan. He was speaking during a parliament debate on the government's new strategy for the country. In a speech to the parliament on Wednesday morning, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle pushed for more troops to be sent to Afghanistan. "Simply continuing as we have is not an option," he told MPs. "Neither is walking away and looking away." .... On Tuesday, Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet approved sending 850 additional troops to Afghanistan in response to a strategy change by NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) for Afghanistan. That brings the total number of German troops in Afghanistan to more than 5,300. Germany and its allies agreed to send more troops to Afghanistan...at a meeting in London in January. Now Merkel needs the Bundestag or the lower house of parliament to approve the additional troops. Westerwelle said the main task of the German military in the coming months would be to train Afghan police and soldiers. In addition to extra troops, the government has also asked for 260 trainers to be sent to Afghanistan to train local security forces. Beginning in 2011, the German government hopes to begin handing over responsibility to the Afghans for their own security, Westerwelle said.
