Hello,

Interesting thread you have launched Philip, we are more or less working
on the same type of solution (maybe not for the same purpose).

In fact we are currently testing an FPGA AoE target implementation which
has been build from scratch by :

1/ http://www.logic-design-solutions.com/ - FPGA expert, I guess you
already know them ;-)

2/ Us : http://www.alyseo.com/ - Storage, Linux expert.

So far SATA IP is done, AoE IP is almost finalised, and we are thinking
of RAID implementation (all that within one FPGA of course).

Our first goal is to have an evaluation kit including :
      * FPGA with AoE IP, SATA IP maybe RAID (IP here mean Intellectual
        Property),
      * some NICs ports ( 2 x GbE or maybe 10 GbE),
      * A few SATA connector (for 2, 4 or more disks).

As you can imagine performances expected is what we are focus on and we
have plenty of ideas... which really make us confident on the fact this
type of implementation will become the world fastest SAN(*) (we are not
joking or doing any marketing stuff here, we are just engineers) !

To do so time and money are critical parameters (hardware design, kit
and pre-release cost a lot) and we will appreciate your feedback on our
project :
      * Will you think this project will be of interest for companies
        (end-users, OEM...) ?
      * Will some of you will or may purchase an AoE target kit for
evaluation ? If yes, what features will you appreciate to have
included (raid, number of disks.../...) and last but not least
        at what price ?
      * Which type of features would you like to see on final product
(raid level, cli, web gui, type and number of network NICs,
number of SATA disks(*), AoE only or some other protocols also,
        monitoring feartures.../...).

Looking forward to have your feedback and we hope we will be able to
keep you posted on our project. BTW if any of you know a business angel
which have cash to put in a startup then ask him to contact us :)

(*) Of course the world fastest SAN target we are think about will
certainly not use any SATA drives (HDD or SSD) but more some embedded
chips managed by FPGA/ASIC.
