I'm using fop too. The only thing I'm missing so far is wrapping text around pictures. But it's scaling images very nicely and creates good pdfs. For invoking java I'm using nsjava as I've some other tasks for it, too. It slows down the startup process of aolserver, but once it's up it is pretty snappy because it isn't forking and starting up a new JVM every time.
