I think the no dhtml rule could be worth re-thinking. As long as it
downgrades cleanly.

php.net used to make some quite innovative use of dhtml in their api
documentation.

speaking of that, php.net also have some very useful api search
shortcuts - for instance, just type:

php.net/sprintf

into your browser and it will (speedily) serve up the docs and a
side-bar listing all related strings functions.

admittedly we don't have the cornucopia of functions that php does, but
i still regularly need reminding and it takes too many clicks!

The aolserver.com website needs a face-lift. No, more than that: it
needs a professional look and feel to it. I'm talking like
www.mysql.com and www.php.net -- not award-winning, but it doesn't look
like someone just wrote some copy text in MS Word and did "Save as
HTML".

I'd like to get anyone who is interested in volunteering some time to
create a two page design mock for the proposed new design for the
site. The two pages:

1) Home page
2) Generic article/content page

Adhere to the following style guide:

DO'S: XHTML 1.0, CSS 1.0/2.0, sensible <div> and <span> usage,
cross-browser friendly, liquid layout (important!), relative
       font sizes.

DON'TS: No Flash, no DHTML, no JavaScript, no heavily nested tables,
no fixed-width layout, no fixed-size fonts.

Added bonuses would be to provide two or three alternate color palettes
so we can rotate the theme of pages without modifying the design. i.e.,
variants of the generic content page with graphic treatments in
different themes by simply changing the color palette of the art
involved.

I leave it up to the contributors to decide most of the finer details
(two- vs. three-column layout, what content belongs on the home page and
where it should be placed, etc.) -- be creative but also design for use
in mind.

Everyone's welcome to submit more than once. Submit design mocks to me
by either emailing me a .zip or .tar.gz of all files, or email me an
URL where I can download such a .zip or .tar.gz file. I will then put
them up on the aolserver.com site and ask the community to review and
comment on them.

Legalese: By submitting a design mock, you acknowledge that you transfer
all ownership and rights to it to the AOLserver Project.

Comments? Feedback? Flames? I'm ready to listen.
