Sorry if I was not clear: the directory listed is the docroot.
The subdirectory auth-required is (as the name suggests ;-) the
one the requires authoration. It is *not* listed. I.e.
        lynx http://192.168.0.1/
segfaults.

Just the opposite: the setup works when the subdirectory is indexed
(thanks for the correction, BTW). I.e.
        lynx http://192.168.0.1/auth-required
does *not* segfault. Lynx requests user name and password,
and then displays the contents of <docroot>/auth-required.

I hope this makes things clearer.
