that's sad news, and unexpected, actually. However, if there are
enthusiasts who really want to do something with Apertium at GSoC and are
not focusing on a particular language, but the technology, they might want
to look into

(the first three tasks are Apertium-related, on MT and morphological
parsing). The only caveat is that this is specifically tied to the Sumerian
language.
