The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to
Terrorism
(START) held a meeting titled "Catastrophe and Catalyst: 10 Years
Since 9/11.
" The event looked at different strategies for dealing with terrorism,
and how, ten
years after the largest-ever terrorist attack in the U.S., the
government is
approaching the problem.

Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Joseph
Lieberman
(I-CT) delivered the keynote address on countering violent Islamist
extremism.
Morning panel sessions included "myths about terrorism," a panel on
radicalization and then a discussion on "counterterrorism through
building strong,
resilient communities."
In the afternoon, a debate titled “Are We Safer?” Journalist Peter
Bergen and
American counter-terrorism expert Daveed Gartenstein-Ross presented
arguments from both sides of the terrorist threat issue. And former
radicals
discussed lessons learned in their pathway out of extremist ideology.
START is a university-based research center headed by the University of
Maryland They recently published a report in which they examined how
to stop the
radicalization that can lead to terrorism. The group looked at
prisoners in 15
countries to learn what works and what elements could be applied
elsewhere.
Wednesday, less than two weeks before the 10th anniversary of the
September 11th
attacks, the former co-chairs of the National Commission on Terrorist
Attacks
Upon the United States - also known as the 9-11 Commission - reflected
on their
2004 final report and discussed the state of U.S. national security.
The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) presented a progress report
detailing the status
of the unfinished 9/11 Commission recommendations. BPC and 9/11
Commission
Co-Chairs Governor Tom Kean and Congressman Lee Hamilton were joined by
members of the 9/11 Commission in a panel discussion on unfulfilled
9/11
Commission recommendations and the impact on national security.
The 9/11 Commission discussion was moderated by ABC News White House
Correspondent Ann Compton.

Dunham, for whom a letter in Jakarta from her son in the United States
could raise
her spirits for a full day, surely wondered about her place in his
life. On rare
occasions, she indicated as much — painfully, wistfully — to close
friends. But she
would not have been inclined to overstate her case. As she told him,
with a dry
humor that seems downright Kansan, “If nothing else, I gave you an
interesting
life.”
