Ok, you wanted it, so you'll get it ;-)

If pod2man writes to stderr, making that fatal is easy:

pod2main --stderr [... other options ...]   2>pod2man-errors
test ! -s pod2man-errors || { cat pod2man-errors ; exit 1 ; }

I'll let it up to you to implement this in the Makefile. 
Don't forget to delete pod2man-errors in make clean ;-)
