You're not the only one that has rusty LaTeX knowledge. :) I think you're right that those files shouldn't be retained but I don't think `make clean` is the right way to remove them. They're now generated as part of the tarball release process and I think we should be deleting them after successful pdf generation but before creating the tar. Does that sound about right to you?
