FWIW, my impression of Rachel Carson was that she was in impassioned scientist that appreciated good science but exposed -- what was then -- the indiscriminate use of pesticides that had an extreme impact on non-target wildlife. Carson's work and writing kindled the formation of EPA, whether you consider that good or bad...
