CORNELL COOPERATIVE EXTENSION'S LAKE ONTARIO SUMMER FRUIT TOUR,
WAYNE COUNTY, NY, THURS, JULY 23.
Regional fruit producers may be interested in the upcoming Lake
Ontario Summer Fruit Tour of Wayne County, NY. The organized program
(See outline below) promises a lot to see and to learn about, and
provides an opportunity to meet with fellow producers and vendors
over lunch, and pick up pesticide applicator credits in the bargain.
No registration fee is attached - but please, plan on
pre-registering if you plan to go. Commercial companies represented

Bring your NY DEC Pesticide Applicator ID card, umbrella for sun or
rain, sunscreen & floppy hat, perhaps a lawn chair. See the
registration slip at the end of this notice. Please register by July
15 so they are able to plan for lunches and supplies. See the

July 23rd, you will sign-in and pick up the day's Program at 8:00 AM
at the first stop: Van DeWalle Fruit Farm LLC, Shaker Rd., Alton, NY.

Stop 1 - Van DeWalle Fruit Farm LLC, Alton, NY - See the rootstock
research planting established by Scott Van DeWalle in cooperation
with Cornell's Dr. Terence Robinson, NYSAES, Geneva. Dr. Robinson,
will present research results and show several new rootstocks with
promising resistance to diseases such as fire blight and Phytophthora
root rot). Also, crop management, yield efficiency and profitability
potential for Honeycrisp and Gala with these rootstocks.
(Directions to first stop: Van DeWalle Fruit Farm LLC., Shaker Rd.,
Alton, NY. Travel to intersection of Rt. 104 and Rt. 14 in Wayne Co.,
Alton, NY. Turn north on Rt. 14, and travel 0.3 miles, then turn
right on Ridge Rd. and go 50 feet, then turn left on Shaker Rd., go
0.9 miles and look for Cornell Fruit Event signs. Turn right into

Stop 2 - Apple Hill Farm, Sodus, NY - There are at least 150 acres of
apples under mating disruption at this site for control of codling
moth and oriental fruit moth. Apple Hill Farm, Longview Fruit Farm,
and Mckeon Fruit Farm have been cooperating with the first large
scale mating disruption project in WNY for a second year. Dr. Art
Agnello (NYSAES) and Deborah Breth (CCE-LOF) will discuss mating
disruption products and areawide mating disruption progress. (Project
funded by NE Center for Risk Management Education; other CM control
research funded by NYFVI.)
Stop 3 - Donald De Marree Fruit Farm, Inc., Williamson, NY. Tom and
Alison DeMarree have been on an aggressive replant schedule planting
high density, highly feathered trees, incorporating irrigation, and
tree training techniques. We will revisit the 2006 planting featured
on the 2006 Summer Tour. What does it look like now? Dr. Terence
Robinson will discuss planting system performance with different
nursery stock quality. Pros and cons of the planting system will be
presented along with progress in profitability in the planting.
Alison DeMarree (CCE-LOF) will discuss laborsaving equipment. A
"platform" to increase labor efficiency and comfort to do orchard
tasks will be on display. Tom DeMarree
and Terence will discuss irrigation (installation & benefits) and
trellis installation methods and equipment.
Lunch! B. Forman Park, Pultneyville, NY. Enjoy lunch at the lake,
visit with exhibitors, and network with other growers at Forman Park,
Pultneyville, NY. The many supporting companies of the fruit industry
sponsor lunch.

Stop 4 - Chris Hance Fruit Farm, Williamson, NY. Chris Hance has
supported cooperative research with Cornell on multiple endeavors:
the RAMP projects, weed control demos, and assisting with timing
models for control of CM under mating disruption (funded by NYFVI).
Dr. Robin Bellinder of Cornell will discuss weed control options in
new plantings with new herbicides. Dr. Andrew Landers (NYSAES) will
show growers how to improve herbicide spray coverage, and prevent
drift by the use of new sprayer technology to prevent glyphosate
injury. Dr. Kerix Cox (NYSAES) will discuss management of fire blight
in young trees. Kerik will present information on managing and
minimizing the use of streptomycin and incorporating alternative
strategies. Dr. Art Agnello (Cornell University) will present the
results of his RAMP project, using reduced-risk insecticides and
monitoring to control arthropod pests.
Stop 5 - Lagoner Farms, Williamson, NY. Lagoner Farms is a family
owned venture producing tree fruit crops, berries,
and some vegetables, which sell produce directly at their farm market
and several farmers markets. Mark Lagoner and Dan Bennett (USDA-NRCS)
will discuss cost-sharing and implementation of a new pesticide
mixing/loading facility. Craig Kahlke (LOFT) will discuss marketing
season extension in sweet cherries and berries through the use of
modified atmosphere packaging. 4:00 PM - Adjourn
