Nathan Mates was (is) a software developer. Bev Cadieux
was an appleworks guru who specialized in using (and
selling) Timeout series addons for Appleworks.

Nathan did fly off the handle but often very intelligent
people (he was a Caltech guy) do not suffer fools well.
Nathan may be most famous for a general bug fix for gs/os
called something like G.U.P.P. You have to understand
that when you spend hours perfecting a program its not
like your baby and you hate to see your baby misused or
trampled on.

Bev I knew in Houston, before she moved to places north
and west. She was in it to make money. A noble goal but
people will pirate and steal. No use broad brushing
everyone for the sins of some. I never thought of Bev as
particularly smart but she did work hard at her specialty.
She suffered fools not at all. Even Microsoft has their
products stolen and copied, big time. It's a cost of
doing business. They have attempted to minimize their
loses. Bev did too. But you have to do it with a smile
and a velvet glove. Bev never could do this. Nathan
either.

I don't have as negative a reaction to them as many do.
Having said that Bev has it in for me for even trying to
be even handed. But I still have trouble hating her.
Nathan, because of his profession of Christ, has
something in common with me. But he was hard to be close
to as well.

Nathan without an attitude, or if you could fight through
the guff, was a very helpful guy. Bev too, though I never
could really figure out most timeouts. I watched her demo
them many years ago and couldnt figure out how to use them
or why I needed them enough to buy them for $50 apiece or
whatever they were. Just like many here, I had a budget
and couldn't even really rationalize a lot of large
purchases for my computer. She would get openly mad at
user group meetings and complain we weren't buying her
wares. She complained that we wanted to get stuff for
free. Well, yeah, duhh, that's why you join a user's
group to learn tips and shortcuts and get free advice.
