Hi!

I have been also without receiving mail from the Apple ][ List from May
20th, but I thought it was common in this list... I suscribed that same
day, and because they say "wherever you go, do what you see" (old Spanish
saying) I waited to see what was happening...

Ok. Now for the questions. I have an original *unmodified* Apple //c, with
the original ROM and motherboard - yes, the ones with the modem port bug
and without 3.5" disk support. And I would like to upgrade it to revision
1, in order to have the Mini-Assembler in ROM and, possibly, being able to
get a 3.5" external disk drive to exchange files with PCs via the Macintosh
Classic I own ;-) . The serial port bug isn't a concern for me, because I
only use it to connect the //c to one of my PCs in order to transfer disk
images (or to use the PC as a terminal for ProDOS! :-) ), and it works
without problem at 19200 bps.

I know the Mini-Assembler upgrade would involve installing the new 32 Kb
ROM/EPROM of the Apple //c revision 1. But my model only has 16 Kb of ROM.
Somewhere I have read that you should cut and solder some solder points in
an original //c motherboard in order to make it work with a 32 Kb ROM. Is
it right? Do you have more information? And, where can I get a 32 Kb ROM
image so I can burn it in a EPROM chip? I think a 27256 should work for
it...

I'm not sure if the ROM upgrade would fix also the 3.5" drive support. Is
the new drive supported by a SmartPort driver located in the new ROM, or do
I need an updated IWM chip? In the case of being the SmartPort driver, what
ProDOS version do I need to download to the Apple //c in order for it to
support SmartPort devices? In 5.25" disks I only have ProDOS 1.1.1, the
version that came with my Apple //c... :-(

By the way, I know Apple provided that upgrade (from revision 0 to revision
1) for free, but that was almost 20 years ago, so I think I'm not going to
ask for it in an Apple dealer ;-) .

One last question: do you know where can I get blank or used 5.25" DD
disks? I've run out of them, and have found that HD ones doesn't work, at
in my //e Enhanced's Disk ][ drive.

Greetings from sunny (and veeeeery hot :-( ) Spain,

Antonio Rodrguez (Grijan)
