My recollection is that the UniDisk 3.5 drives WILL work on any IIGS,
but the Apple 3.5 drives will NOT work on the II Plus, IIe, or IIc
(although they might on the IIc Plus. It has to do with the UniDisk 3.5
drives being "smart" drives, with their own 65c02 processor, and the
Apple 3.5. drives being lobotomized (i.e., NO 65c02), and so the byte
encoding and decoding has to be done by the host computer rather than
within the drive.
The 3.5" drive deal I know, to whit:
Unidisk 3.5's work on a GS, but their 4:1 interleave makes them slower on
a GS then an Apple 3.5" drive. Unidisk 3.5's work in Enhanced //e's with
the Liron card. Apple 3.5" drives work in an enhanced //e if you have the
so-called "SuperDrive Card" installed, but they still only work with 800k
disks.
The UniDisk 5.25 and Apple 5.25 drives, on the other hand, did not
require any extra processing to use; an Apple 5.25 drive is different
only in its daisy-chainability, and is otherwise electrically the same
as the original (Alps? Shugart?) Disk II drive for the Apple II.
Please explain the daisy-chainability issue. Both drives mentioned can be
daisy-chained, since they both posses DB19 ports and cables. Please note
that I am NOT talking about the steel, brick-like Disk ][ drives.
Thanks,
Warr
