Hi, The GLP OpenGL extension in Solaris/Sparc allows you to access 3D Graphics GPU's for processing/rendering without requiring an XServer. This is of course useful to render data on a server and display it across a network. See http://www.opengl.org/about/arb/notes/glP_presentation.pdf for more details on GLP.
While I'm not aware of Sun's plans to Open Source the SunRay Server Software at this time, it would be nice to see some 3D acceleration support, my only Bugbear with SunRays or similar network appliances is the lack of support for 3D rendering. I'm not talking ultimate 3D graphics performance, but sufficient to replace all desktop computers in an organisation with SunRay's including 3D Workstations. VirtualGL http://virtualgl.sourceforge.net/ is a project aimed at Displaying the results of 3D rendering across a network, and might be of interest. In a similar way it should be possible to add 3D rendering support into the Virtual Framebuffer in the SunRay Server Software such that the results of 3D rendering are transferred across the network using the existing SunRay protocol. Is anyone at Sun currently working on such a project? Best Regards, Peter Firmstone. -- This messages posted from opensolaris.org
