Package: aptitude Version: 0.2.10-1 Severity: normal aptitude's holds arn't very useful, since they are ignored by dselect and apt both.
I committed a change so aptitude will now set selections back to dpkg. dselect should use this information (although I don't know if you are still using it after all of these years), and apt should have at least "holds" into account -- I don't think that it honours other states (e.g. pending installs/removes/purges).
