gdb for backtrace would definitely be good. We've got instructions in German on http://linuxwiki.de/gdb . Some quite verbose english instructions are on http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces although only the section "Obtaining a stack trace using just GDB" is the only one that is of interest to you.
