I've been digging some more, and found that the Open Financial
Exchange group has already updated the OFX specs to cover multifactor
authentication. The new spec version numbers are 1.0.3, 2.0.3, and
2.1.1. Specs available from: http://www.ofx.net/ofx/de_spec.asp The
new specs have a May 1, 2006 date on the page footers. The files on
the web have creation dates in August or September. Most of the
changes are in chapter 2 in the description of the signon request.

So, it looks to me as if the only reason to drop ofxdirectconnect is
if the banks don't want to force their customers to upgrade Quicken/
Money yet again. There is some additional work required on the bank
server end, but not any more that is required for web interface
changes. It'll be interesting to see the timing and nature of the
banks' communication with customers on this issue. I haven't heard
anything from any of my banks yet.

OTOH, the aqbanking ofxdirectconnect backend will need maintenance.
And at this point, it is hard to tell just how the various banks are
going to choose to implement the new MFA features available.
