What's the point of offering to backup the recently downloaded APM ?
You can always go get another copy.
You CAN'T get your own stuff back if the APM overwrites it.
Michael's suggestion is very good.
The APM should tell you what files it contains and then offer:
Do you want an automatic install ? [Y/n]
Followed by further polite dialog and backup if the user says yes
and an offer to place the extracted files in Download (or elsewhere)
if the user says no.
