1) The "crossed" cable is null modem. (i.e. no modem required)
2) The standard cable used to connect external modems is NOT crossed.
The "crossing" occurs in the modems.
3) The crossing is required for connecting two computer comm ports
together because BOTH computers have xmit data on pin 2 and recv data
on pin 3. so it's pretty obvious that if you want one to listen to what
the other says, xmit data on each must go to recv data on the other.
But this is not all. The handshake wires must be crossed too. :(
BTW, with comtool you should see the modem responses in command mode
whether the modem is internal or external.
If you send +++ATH it should say OK.
If it doesn't, the problem is in your communication to the internal modem.
