John, I don't know what you are confusing with copyright (since patents don't run out for 17 years or something - from memory). Copyright lasts even longer than patents (is it 50 years after the author has expired?)!
Anything you have heard about DOS or W95 copyright "expiring" is, well ... crap! Furthermore, I expect M$ still makes plenty of money from licensing DOS for the embedded market.
