Thomas,
On my Compaq 575 I use a Netdial 1.3 - Arachne 1.60 combo using
epppdd to connect, and have the output redirected to a "output.txt"
file with a >. It cuts down on the amount of output that scrolls down
the screen, and it's in "output.txt" should I want to look at it.
It's interesting, but I have no control over what's there, all I
am concerned with is 100% connections, and I get that now.
I have several computers, mostly old ones, and work with one for
a while, then move the improvements I develop to the others, if
applicable. Some don't get played with much. All of them, however,
have getting on the web as their focus. Arachne is used on all of
them, as is WIN 3.1. On this one, I have WIN 98, and get into
Arachne and Bobcat using a boot disk. WIN 98 can let me into my
old configuration at bootup if I F8, but passes me by a lot of
times, hence the boot disk.
Those machines you are thinking about exploring seem quite powerful,
and it would be a challenge to get them running with Netscape, etc.
You might have to say goodby to Arachne if they don't have DOS on
them, I'm not sure.

The first time you logon with MICQ, you get prompted for a UIN (user
ID number) or enter 0 (zero) then a password (you will be prompted)
and the ICQ server will assign you a UIN. It is probably a good idea
to record these, but the program records them and you should not need
them agains except if the program gets damaged or deleted.

Bernie,
I didn't get play.exe in the package. I'll look at the website
and see if I can find it. How big is play.exe? Is it possible to
send it to me as an attachment? Right now, I am using plany that
comes with Arachne. I copied plany.exe to my "sounds" directory,
and am using .wav files in my .bat files I use to get Arachne
and Bobcat. Having lots of fun with those .wav files, but
would like to do the .mid files too.

I don't know about sbbasic.exe but Creative have an *extremly* good DOS
MIDI program called play.exe perhaps it came along?
The reason why I think it's "*extremly* good" is because it is the ONLY
MIDI program (for DOS) that works on any of my computers. Now if I had a
non-standard card (some "noname", GUS, etc.) then I wouldn't complain. But

Hey youze guyz!

Nothing like alphabet testing for learning new things. Here I was
trying to learn about HTML and TAGS and all that other stuff, and
trying to get things done so I could open up my editor and start
seeing if I can get some customized macros made to make tagging and
untagging easier, but ended up first having to hand edit my hotlist.htm
[because some of the entries are outside acceptable parameters set up
for htlstmgr.exe -- I checked source code] to make certain I didn't
lose any of the new links I grabbed in the last two days, and !voila!
I learned new things!

Today I learned how to drop an anchor and make a line that will take me
to that anchor. <G> I also learned how to put these neat separation
lines above &/or below something on the page. And I learned that not
all TAGS have a matching opposite. All this, just from trying to get
another job out of the way.

Hey, it's just a flag ! <G>

If my batch files find SYSTEM=CRAP then they know they have to re-boot to load

Hello Bernie, Gregor, and All:
I downloaded 95DOSAPP.EXE and located play.exe.
It runs some of my midi's but not all. Also, I can't figure out
how to get Arachne to call it. I can do that in .bat files in front
of and behind Arachne, as I do now with my .wav files and plany.exe,
but I am wondering how Arachne can use play.exe. Right now, if I
click on a .mid file in Arachne, Arachne can't play it, just allows
it to be saved to my c:\sounds directory, where I have play.exe
I then exit to dos, and type "play song3.mid" for instance, and
play.exe plays it, if it's the right format. Some midi's won't
play for some reason.
Arachne does the .wav files nicely, however.
Thanks,
Michael L. Dawley

The attached file _should_ clear things-up (a little bit anyway)<g>
(report created by WATCH.EXE)

BTW, it also indicates the importance of _all_ files needed by an

 Have you tried Cubic Player???
http://www.cubic.org/player/
Get the player itself (ocp251.zip) _and_ all 8 "GUS Patch" files.
(you'll need ARJ.EXE to decompress the patches)

If you've never heard a MIDI the way it was _meant_ to sound...
         You won't believe your ears !!! <g>

The only time I heard them played this well was with a Linux MIDI player.
(the Linux player also requires the Gus patches to do it on an SB card)

Aha! Change these back to their original values and we'll see how it goes.
(Actually you probably only need to change cachepath and downloadpath).

Thanks abundantly all for your quick replies.

Roger,
It was version 1.48b that I first tested, and I have been trying updates
ever since hoping to discover it working one day. I will try your
suggestions.

Sergei,
I will also try your suggestions (if I can). I keep thinking it must be
something obvious and simple in my setup. As I mentioned, other users of
the Freewwweb and Compuserve ISPs in my local area are connecting and
surfing via Arachne quite successfully with only the Primary and Secondary
DNS, no proxy server address. But you may be right. I will try to get
Freewwweb techs to work with me. One interesting note: Yesterday,
Freewwweb SMTP server refused to deliver my email addressed to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] so I had
to use a Compuserve connection to mail this. I am assuming that they have
arachne.cz domain blocked as a supposed spam relay address.

Clarence,
As you will see (MEM.log below) my reading of the free DOS conventional was
a bit hasty. Largest executible program size is actually 598k -- isn't that
enough for Arachne? You can also see that I have several handy-dandy
utilities loaded high. Surely, I must have tried testing Arachne originally
with a pure DOS configuration, but I really can't remember. I will try
again, just in case one of those utilities is simply conflicting with
Arachne's use of memory. Do you know if Arachne uses any of the high memory
area?

|
| I have Arachne loaded on two computers, one is a 586/133 MHz with 8 MB ram
| (originally a 486/33 MHz) and the second is a P75 with 40 MB ram. The
best
| that I can do on the 586/133 is Arachne 1.48. 1.49 (with dynamic images)
| won't load or crashes, I don't remember which. On the P75, I have 1.60b1
| loaded and it works great!
|
| Suggestions: Turn the animated X-I logo off. (In ARACHNE.CFG look for
| "Logo" and change it to read, "Logo 0".)
|
| In ARACHNE.CFG, do you have the home page set to "home.arachne.cz"? At
some
| point Michael P. changed his URL to this, but I can't remember when.

| Subject: Re: Arachne load error
| I beleive the problem you described is caused by the kind of your Internet
| access not by hard- or soft- ware on your local computer. I see two
| possible reasons: i)wrong DNS server setting in your arachne.cfg,
| ii)disable or wrong Proxy.server setting in your arachne.cfg.
|
| To localize i) problem you can point as URL pure IP address (not the
| hostname) of your provider host. In this case DNS-server will be not
| involved in the connection process and you get your provider home page
| certainly. Then you can try to connect to another internet server by the
| same manner i.e. type in the URL field pure IPaddress not the hostname.
| If this does work for your provider server only and doesn't for outer
| net, therefore, your traffic passes through the proxy.provider server and
| you should set UseProxy to Yes and set correct address of HTTPproxy in
| arachne.cfg. If you don't know IP address of your provider servers
| you can call him and ask or you may learn them with the help of any of
your
| friends who has Internet access via Unix or WinNT compatible machine by
| NSLOOKUP utility.

| Type MEM /C >MEM.log and post a copy of MEM.log.

Subject: Ghostscript (what is .pdf)

Dear Richard,

It IS possible to put Ghostscript in the directory of YOUR choice and
still have it find its fonts. But it IS obscure!!

Maybe these batch files that I use will help you. There are
three - one each for screen and printer and one that will
give you the choice and select page numbers:

GS.BAT runs Ghostscript to display on the screen. Press RETURN after
each screenful to get the next. You won't get a text prompt
overwriting the display.

=== GS.BAT =======================
@echo off
c:
cd c:\graphics\gs
set GS_OPTIONS=-q -Ifonts -dNOPROMPT
call c:\graphics\gs\gs386 %1 -dBATCH
set GS_OPTIONS=
cls
==================================

GSPRINT.BAT sends it to a laser printer without needing you to
press RETURN after it sends each page.

=== GSPRINT.BAT ==================
@echo off
c:
cd c:\graphics\gs
set GS_DEVICE=ljet4
set GS_OPTIONS=-q -Ifonts -dFIXEDMEDIA -dNOPAUSE
call gs386 -r300 -sPAPERSIZE=a4 %1 -dBATCH
set GS_DEVICE=
set GS_OPTIONS=
pause
cls
==================================

SHOWPDF.BAT is a combination of the previous two. In addition, it
allows you to state start and end page numbers of the document.
It requires you to have CHOICE somewhere on your path. I think
that this came with MS-DOS 6.22, although I use it with
MS-DOS 5.00.

Hope that you can make some use of these!
