Under Linux, you're probably running an MTA daemon (sendmail,etc.),
which can both send and receive email, and have it configured not
to use a smarthost (probably not a good idea).

The MTA in KA9Q (Yan, etc.) sends direct-to-MX by default but can
be configured to use a smarthost.
