Plug and play is certainly a seperate matter to something being a
winmodem. I guess it is a matter of the computer interface being
software controlled, rather than the modem functions being software
 implemented.

My comment is that we have a mobile Nokia phone which unfortunately
requires win9x to function as a modem.  The reason is that although it
is a "real" modem (RS 232 into FM modulation of 400 odd Mhz indeed!) its serial
cable to the phone does not use the ascii, but some weird
tripple character code I think.  A friend working for Nokia says that
drivers for Linux are imminent and drivers for DOS possible.

The whole matter is somewhat galling as the salesman assured us that the
Nokia was DOS compatible, and in fact the model before ours was.
Apparently Ericsson dataphones still use hayes command set and normal
 serial protocol?
