I think that is one thing Clarence is working toward.
I'm working around to getting set up with password protection on a page
in my shell account. You see, I don't want to have full public access
to an FTP site, but do want to be able to put files up for certain
people to access. For one thing, with cable modem multi-megabyte
downloads are no problem for me ... particularly since I'm connected
24/7 and don't have to worry about extra charges for on-line time or
tying up the telephone. Because of that, when someone really needs a
large file, I could download, split it into manageable size packages,
and put them up to be downloaded in smaller bites by those who need the
software. But first I need to get the cgi setup and onto a page and
working. <G>
Why the password, if the download page isn't linked from anywhere?
Well, someone might decide to keep coming back and visiting, just to see
what was "available." With password protection, once the person had
what they needed the password could be changed. Even if I put the files
up and released the password to the Arachne list, at some point in time
I'd want to change the password because archives of the list are
available.
My ISP is cutting me slack all over the place, allowing me to run my
domain in my "personal webpage space." I don't want high traffic
causing him to reconsider. If that happened, everyone would be out in
the cold. <G>
