  Check http://www.pricewatch.com in the "not exactly new"
section.  386 and 486 notebooks from ~ $150.
  Pentiums start at $250.

  Heh... I just upgraded to AMD K6-2/500, and 64MB SDRAM.
One of the RAM modules was bad, and corrupted my file system.
I was hoping to get functional enough to back up what I 
have before wiping everything and starting over, but it
looks like I'll mostly have to make do from a full backup
I made 3 weeks ago, along with ftp'ing selected files to
the other computer (which is very limited on space)

  Advice for anyone running Linux who upgrades memory.
Make a bootable memtest86 floppy, and check your memory
before ever allowing your hard drive to mount.  If the 
RAM is bad, this little step will save you a LOT of 
grief.

(Oh, yeah, the CPU was $44 - found through the above mentioned
site)
