   Aha !  Now I understand.   That is something I haven't noticed, but I
can't remember ever receiving more that one email (in a single download)
with "viewable" files attached.

  Thinks: The attachment is written to the TEMP directory, and called
from there when you click on it. Looking in the TEMP directory, the
attachment is there under its own (8.3) name. Wouldn't a second
attachment (from a second email) be treated in exactly the same way ?
