I do not know how arachne friendly yahoo is these days, since they are
busy installing bells and whistles. But it is one of the few sites I
know of what offers free POP3 and SMTP email accounts, in addition to the
rather annoying web-based variety. My ex-girlfriend has been using their
pop3/smtp account for over a year, goes quite a volume business (she is
a political activist) and has not had any significant trouble. I believe
they even offer an auto-vacation message feature. To get the pop3/smtp
mail you have to sign up, both for the web-based mail and some kind of
set of extra features whose name escapes me. However the latter is completely
free.
