I have a Nokia 6210 and it acts as a standard Hayes modem when you
connect it to the serial port.. I use it constantly as I live on a boat
and have no land line.

the basic speed you get out of a cell phone is 9600 bps. However, there
is a system called (I think) HSDC (high speed data calling?) that
utilises a couple of error correcting channels and possibly some
other guff to get speeds up to about 48,000 bps allegedly. Your phone
network must support this. Here in the UK, only Orange does and they
only go up to 28,800 bps. If you have Windows then the nokia
'driver' supplies the init code for these faster speeds but since
I dont then I had to get it directly. My network allows me to use
14,400 bps on my normal tariff (which is almost free in off peak times)
and I use "AT+CBST=14,0,1" to set that - there is a hefty surcharge for
the faster speeds (19,200 and 28,000) so I dont know the init string to
turn them on.

The phone understands a good part of the hayes command set, and it
emulates a modem completely - you can call any other modem. I use it
for internet and BBS systems. I think it might do fax too, but I'm
not sure since I couldnt be bothered to download fax software.

You might have to get the phone network to enable it for your
phone at their end too. Look on the Nokia website for info also.

apart from 3G which will be whenever, there are other phones coming
out now with GPRs which is a packet based service (rather than
connection based) - this would be way better for me except that its
rather expensive per megabyte.

I like the look of the Ericson T39.
