The configure script figures out exactly the way your system has been put together, and tailors things accordingly. The precompiled binaries work only for a particular kind of system. I don't believe that typing "./configure, make, make install" at the command prompt it's a job reserved only for linux gurus :) (well when you're stuck with older linux distributions like I am, this is the only way of keeping your box up-to-date).
