I have found that by using posix threads I can keep the emulator running very smoothly, as well as some small changes to how the buffer operates.
http://giles.vickycoleman.co.uk/~daniel/sound_new.tar.bz2 contains files to replace from my previous attempt at sound, which will make it work much, much better. There is still a little issue with 4 or 8 channel sound, but they don't make everything go slow any more, so for example you may play Tower of Babel.
