I'm sure no other shortcuts besides compiz's own definitions work. I also try your way. Unfortunately it proves my conclusion too. Compiz eats up the alt. When I press "Alt+e", nothing happens. When I disable compiz and try it again, I can get "^[e" while pressing "Alt+e".
