as per https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56986, there's some trouble with ver. 7.0.0 of this driver. it needs KMS mode now, but according to a couple comments, it doesn't wok with that either.
if it doesn't, it took me almost 5 min. to downgrade to the previous version, 6.14.6. -- phani.
