Arch is Free, and no you don't need to pay anyone, and yes, Arch is every bit
as good as you have heard.
When you install Arch, make use of the install-guide (on the home page), make
use of the wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/) -- best on the planet -- and if
you get stuck, use the forum for questions (https://bbs.archlinux.org/).
