Man pages suggest that switch is for ATA or SCSI from what I understand.
Might be worth asking in their mailing list.

The problem lies with `smartctl --scan`, which returns `/dev/nvme0`
instead of `/dev/nvme0n1`. So if you have a tool (such as `telegraf`)
that reads the output of `smartctl --scan` to get the list of devices
and then attempts to access `/dev/nvme0`, it will receive a simple
“Smartctl open device: /dev/nvme0 failed: Permission denied” error. If
it used `/dev/nvme0n1` instead, it would work.
I imagine that, in the end, the problem lies with `smartools`.
