I have tried many kernels, nitro-sources, no-sources, arch kernels, vanilla kernels, and gentoo kernels. Surprisingly hate me if you want. The gentoo kernel I like and I'm using right now. But its not very easy to do unless you have a gentoo box lying around. I would say experiment yourself...and find what works best on your hardware because every box is different.

I can't possibly imagine there'd be any "distro-specific" caveats with compiling kernels, but I'm also somewhat curious about the various patch branches etc that I've seen online. Some seem to deal with security, others with bugfixes, some with performance ... anyone have any suggestions on things I might look into?
