sometimes the devs of software are using gcc 3 and other older 
compiler/libs and to make a software work in arch, you have to have a 
patch for it. 

more active projects get this changes applied in the next release and the 
patch can be removed. 

this kind of patches often are named also like this... like 
"gcc3.4-fix.patch" or "gcc4-fix.patch"
