I believe when you install the gnome-session package the /etc/profile.d/gnome.sh is installed.  Thus the only thing needed is to add "exec gnome-session" to your ~/.xinitrc, logout and back in so that /etc/profile is re-sourced.  Of course this assumes there are no customizations in place that prevent /etc/profile from being sourced.

Of all the suggestions in the thread, I don't like this one the most.  You
shouldn't edit your PATH in /etc/profile or anywhere.  Logging out and
logging back in is what you have to do after installing the gnome package.
