First of all, I know this is actually a developer discussion and it's
not my business to interfere so sorry if I'm crossing any boundaries.

I've been following this discussion and whether tpowa wants to maintain
the kernel package is a totally different issue.

I think I speak on behalf of all the ArchLinux user community when I say
that the ArchLinux kernel is rock solid as it is now. It's a LOT more
stable than the kernels maintained by other distributions when the fact
is that those other distributions usually have a lot of people working
on that single kernel package. Tpowa is a already doing a great job and
so are the rest of the ArchLinux developers.

The main reason I still use ArchLinux is that I can rely on the kernel
booting everytime. Back in 2006, I had to try some more popular
distributions because I was helping people install them on their
desktops and laptops in an attempt to spread Linux in an fully MS
Windows environment and a lot of those distribution's kernels were too
buggy. One distro's kernel was a mix between 2.6.15 , 2.6.16/17 and they
labeled it a stable long term release when it hardly booted on 5 of my
friends' laptops.
And guess what? ArchLinux always booted fine on every single machine
thanks to tpowa's efforts.

Also if you look at the patches in the kernel26 package, it's only bug
fixes, driver fixes or support for some filesystems or devices.
There's also the logo_linux_clut**.ppm; there's really no new features
there because we're also not adding bootsplash/gensplash or tuxonice
feature patches.
Even if we backport a fix for a driver that's not going to be in
upstream before at least 2.6.24, this is still not adding new features.
It only means that 2.6.23 and lower should have been tested better
upstream. There is a difference between bug fixing and adding new
features.

I was taught in university that in any field of engineering, the most
important thing is common sense and the ability to sustain a constant
quality of your work and I think tpowa has shown the ability to do this.

Regards,
Hussam.
