Dear friends and colleagues, We would like to invite you to join a new Working Group on Open Data in Archaeology:
http://wiki.okfn.org/wg/archaeology The new Working Group is part of the Open Knowledge Foundation [1], a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2004 and dedicated to promoting open data, open content and the digital public domain [2] - from sonnets to statistics, genes to geodata. Please let me know if you would like to join at your earliest convenience. Also, you are encouraged to forward this announcement to any other person who might be interested. I will be sending it to some well-known international mailing lists, but please consider also involving existing local communities of archaeologists (and others) that already aware of the importance of open data. The idea came out after I discovered the Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network [3], an OKF project defined as “Debian of data”. There are already a few packages there tagged “archaeology” [4] and it will be interesting to see how many open data resources are already available in our field. Then the working group purpose is going to be promoting best practices for making data open. I'm really looking forward this working group as a major opportunity for bringing the freedom and opportunities of open data into archaeological research and resource management.
