The shapefile export that you are looking at from Historic Places LA is not 
the same as what you need to use to upload.

The shapefiles you use to upload can be very simple (it could actually have 
no fields if you wanted), as you can see in the documentation 
here: http://arches3.readthedocs.io/en/latest/arches-data/#from-shapefile. 
 All you need to do is correctly fill out the FIELD_MAP section of the 
config file if you want to map any fields in your attribute table to nodes 
in the arches resource graph.

The shapefile upload function should work well for you, but one problem 
I've found is that there is no way to group attributes when you upload a 
shapefile (name and name-type can't be loaded as a grouped pair, for 
example). To get around that, a while ago, I made some ArcGIS tools (if 
that is the software you are using) that will convert a shapefile into a 
.arches file, which is a more robust way of uploading data to an Arches 
database The toolbox is here, and I plan to update it soon:
