Hello ArchivesSpace members,

A number of people here may have already seen or be interested in the action
plan recently released by the Toward a National Finding Aid Network (NAFAN)
project. Led by the California Digital Library (CDL), this project brought
together representatives of many regional aggregators of finding aids in the
U.S. along with funders and expert advisors to discuss ways to build upon the
individual efforts that have been undertaken over the years and make steps
toward a national infrastructure for finding aids and other archival
description.

ArchivesSpace participated in this project as an expert advisor and anticipates
being involved with follow up projects as well. We see ArchivesSpace as
important to this project both as the mechanism by which many institutions
create the archival description that is or could potentially be contributed to
aggregators and as a community that includes a wide variety of institutions,
diverse in type, size, geographic area, staffing, collection focus, and many
other factors important to developing discovery infrastructure that meets an
array of needs.

The action plan is available at https://bit.ly/action-plan-nafan.

>From the release about the plan:

At the heart of the action plan are recommendations for and principles to guide
next steps to implement a sustainable national-level finding aid network, based
on a phased, incremental approach that: moves this effort from a research and
demonstration project to a program; is informed by a research agenda; and, from
the outset, includes work to establish business and governance models that fit
the infrastructure and service model and are grounded in the community's
organizational and financial capacity.

Over the coming months the CDL will convene follow-up discussions with the
planning initiative participants to formalize and initiate work identified in
the action plan.

For more information about the NAFAN planning initiative and outcomes, please
see the project wiki<https://confluence.ucop.edu/display/NAFAN>.

On the ArchivesSpace side, we welcome any thoughts you have about the value of
regional and national finding aid/archival description aggregators, and the
degree to which ArchivesSpace is important for your participation in these
efforts.
