We've had the same exact problem, though we're on SP2, not SP3. I can't tell you how much time we spent trying to figure this out, but in the end we needed to update the TWAIN driver for our HP scanner. Once we did that, everything was fine.
Makes no sense, I know, but after trying and trying and getting all sorts of error messages, one finally came up that said to update the TWAIN driver. Give it a shot...hopefully that will work. Good luck! When I went to scan two pages I received an "Assertive Failure" message asking "Abort" "Retry" or "Ignore" and if I clicked on anyone Ariel would shutdown. Now I can only scan one page at a time. If I want to scan two pages at a time I had to use Adobe Acrobat 6.0 then import to Ariel. Has anyone else experienced this problem before? Also is anyone running Ariel on SP-3 for Windows XP. My tech people will not touch anything until I find out if any other library is using this service pack. If no one is then they said they will not look attempt to look at the problem.
