I moved the address book and patron file (one a text file, one an Access file)
to the Ariel folder, and it read it up right away - the saved folder also.
Thanks! We have 3.4,

How dead is the old one? You can get your address book and other settings
from the old installation by running a backup, then restoring to the new
installation. You can't simply copy the files as was possible in previous
versions.

On the old pc:
1. Make sure Ariel is closed. Go to the Ariel directory. Locate & run the
file DatabaseBackupRestore.exe. From options, select Backup.
2. For server, enter the name of your pc (e.g., mine is arieltran2-xp). You
can locate this information in the properties window for My Computer, tab
Computer Name. Use only the first part of the name (i.e. the full name of
mine is arieltran2-xp.library.northwestern.edu, but the only part relevant
here is the individual pc name, not the domain hierarchy).
3. For User Name and Password, the defaults are sa and ariel, respectively.
They should not have been changed when Ariel was installed. If they were,
you can find them by opening the winariel.ini file and searching for
Password. It's in the Database section of the file.
4. Once this information is entered, the Database popup should become
accessible. Backup each database to a separate file.
5. Enter or browse to the path and filename for the saved backup, and click
OK. Ideally, the directory to which you save these files should be on a
networked drive, so you can also access them from the new pc. If not, burn
the entire directory to a CD or copy it to a flash drive.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each of the available databases. Also copy the old
winariel.ini to the directory containing the backups.

On the new pc:
1. Install Ariel (sounds like you already did this).
2. Make sure Ariel is closed. Copy your old winariel.ini file to the new
Ariel directory.
3. In the Ariel directory, locate and run DatabaseBackupRestore.exe. Open it
as before. Select Restore from the Options menu.
4. Enter the new pc name into server name, the same user name and password
you used before (since they're in the winariel.ini file you just copied
over).
5. As before, once you've entered the previous information, the database
popup will populate. You'll restore each database separately.
6. Browse to the backup files you created from the old pc to wherever you've
put them--on your networked drive, CD, or flash drive. Select the
appropriate file. Click OK and the file will restore.

Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each database.

Lacking the ability to access your old Ariel installation, none of this is
possible. If your old computer is dead due to some manner of hard drive
failure, you're probably out of luck. If some other part failed, you should
be able to put the old hard drive in the new pc, and not have to reinstall
anything. If it can't be put in the new pc, perhaps your IT department has
some spare that it can be put in for purposes of running the Ariel backup
routine.

All this reminds me, I don't use Ariel much anymore, but it pays to do
periodic backups. Think I'll go do it now.
