The reason is simple most campus e-mail systems restrict the size of attachments, and in some cases strip out the attachment from e-mails sent from outside of the network. PDF files can become very large very quickly depending on the number of pages and if color scans are sent. Also PDF files and multi-page TIFF files can be used as transport for all kinds of cyber-nastiness. So Ariel and Odyssey provide a safe means of transport that bypasses all e-mail restrictions.
