Dear Ariel Users:

At the Library of Congress, we have always made an effort to accommodate as
many different platforms for electronic document delivery as feasible. However,
there comes a time when we must re-evaluate that feasibility, in an era of
rapidly changing needs, and diminishing resources.

Since the vendor of Ariel Interlibrary Loan software, Infotrieve, Inc., has
stated that they will not support Ariel v.4.11 under Windows 7. We are forced
to shut it down at the Library of Congress, as we imminently will migrate to
the new operating system.

Since our attempted upgrade from v.3.4 to v.4.11 failed, due to our network
configuration, we have no working version of the software now. So, our
effective discontinue date is today, Sept. 6, 2013.

Few libraries, none responding affirmatively to an earlier post this summer,
depend on Ariel for electronic document delivery. We feel the cost to the
international library community of discontinuing Ariel service will be minimal.
More popular alternatives include OCLC's Odyssey, Article Exchange, and simple
PDF email attachments.

The Library of Congress also can make available cloud-based retrieval of copies
of documents too large to send as email attachments, via Signiant Media
Exchange. Please inquire at: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> for details.
