Simply letting it go unanswered and unaddressed, even in these circumstances, would be a major and significant failure of leadership. You're the one who opened this can of worms, only you can close it. You don't have to say much. Explanations and justifications can wait. I think if you just promise to leave Alain alone -- or at least to not feud with him -- for now, that'd be enough, and one or two sentences is all you'd need for that.
