Let me take issue with this last comment. Roger Ebert has claimed that
Medved has misleading statistics. The crux of Ebert's argument is 
that the most sucessful PG and and G movies tend to be produced
by Disney. He argues (with different words) that the studios tend
to move into specific market segments: Disney dominates kids films
so other studios move into other genres. The Disney corporation
has developed great brand name recognition. Note that other studios
have opened up animation departments but have failed to produce
profitable films. Fox studios just closed their animation studio
after two flops. 

So it's not that G movies aren't profitable - it's that you have
one superior firm and other studios go into other kinds of
movies.
