I read The Gunslinger series book by book as it came out. Some books are definitely stronger than others, but the first book was the weakest, in my opinion. I think if you continue reading, you'll be pleasantly surprised. It helps if you like to read fantasy (which I do) since it's a deviation from his normal horror genre.
